What is yoga?

Yoga is a group of ancient physical, mental, and spiritual practices, rooted in Indian philosophy. The Sanskrit word yoga means “union,”—as in uniting body, mind, and spirit—and it’s where the English word “yoke” comes from. In the U.S., many people think of yoga as a physical activity—perhaps only for flexible people. But yoga is more than a physical activity, and there is a yoga style for everyone. Yoga has at least four components: postures (the physical positions, also called “poses” or “asanas”); breath work; deep relaxation; and meditation. Some people do yoga to get a “work out,” but most people don’t. For many people, yoga is about “undoing”, that is, relaxing, releasing, and letting go.

At Bluestem, we offer several styles of yoga. We have some classes for people who want to work hard and break a sweat. But many of our classes are slower paced and more gentle than those. We try hard to have something for just about everyone; if you don’t see what you’re looking for, give us a call or send us an email.

Why do yoga?

A recent publication from Harvard Medical School** names all of these (and more) as benefits of yoga:

  • Reduced stress
  • Better physical health, including reduced risk of heart disease; better diabetes management; back pain relief; reduced arthritis pain
  • Better mental health, including a sharper brain; less depression and anxiety
  • Increased well-being, including better sleep; better body awareness; greater happiness; youthfulness

Who can do yoga?

Just about anyone! Because there are many different styles of yoga.

If you have an injury or health condition, check with your doctor before taking up any new physical activity. Once you get the A-okay, come try Bluestem!


  • You don’t need any experience.
  • You don’t have to be flexible or fit.
  • You don’t have to subscribe to any religion.
  • You don’t have to wear any particular clothes.
  • You don’t have to break a sweat.
  • Your yoga poses won’t look like the poses of others in the room—because every body is different!

Come as you are!

We can help you find a class that’s right for you. In addition to yoga, we have some guided stretching and self myofascial release classes for people who don’t want to do “yoga”, but want greater ease in their body.
